In 2021, the Italian-German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich recorded Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas, a mighty Baroque work for soloviolin, on a successful double disc. “They are formidable tests of technical ability and stamina, but also of musical imagination and expressive range – they never cease to provide challenges, hope, and joy”, says Hadelich. In this concert we will hear the third and second of the Partitas, the latter with its monumental final chaconne, bookending three works closely linked to Hadelich’s career and to Bach’s influence: Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Blue/s Forms, a composition dedicated to the first African-American violinist to play with the New York Philharmonic; “Before Sorrow” from David Lang’s Mystery Sonatas (1957), a contemporary take on Biber’s seventeenth-century Rosary Sonatas; and Ysaÿe’s Violin Sonata “Ballade”, Op. 27 No. 3, one of the most demanding pieces in the Belgian composer and violinist’s catalogue.
