PROGRAMME
The programme is inevitably dominated by the symphonic suite from Giacomo Puccini’s opera, a reworking some of its most famous passages for wind orchestra that draws out its solemn but spectacular nature. It is partnered by two very exciting works: the Rapsodia arousá, composed by Eligio Vila in 2009, and Manuel Seco de Arpe’s Mercury Symphony. This contemporary work, written in 2022, is his third symphonic creation, a contribution to the post-avant-garde movement, characterised by eclecticism and a commitment to pronounced expressiveness that is not at odds with structural rigour.
