Tot i que el dol és una cosa íntima i que cada persona o grup humà experimenta segons la seva sensibilitat, resiliència, actitud vital i magnitud atribuïda a la pèrdua, totes les societats i grups han creat i acordat formes acceptades de dol: espais, llenguatges, colors, vestimentes, gestos o rituals considerats socialment adequats davant de diferents pèrdues. Així i tot, aquests consensos no són universals ni immutables. Són socialment i culturalment construïts, diversos, canviants i dinàmics.
