PROGRAMME
The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace was created by Karl Jenkins in 1999 with the inspiring idea of calling for global peace. During the Renaissance, masses often contained references to secular music (Guillaume Dufay’s is perhaps the best known), as does this composition, but it is not limited to this classical tradition, since it also incorporates texts from the Psalms and Revelation, as well as allusions to Islamic tradition and the works of writers such as Kipling and Tennyson. Premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000, the piece exalts pacifism, with some poignant moments reflecting the real possibility of war and its devastating effects. The Barcelona Symphonic Band will be joined by various choirs in this performance.
